im finally getting off my butt
i thought it would be cool working the night shift here, but it is really hard to go to sleep immediately when i get home from work, and even harder to get moving when i wake up. i always blamed it on not being a "morning" person, but i guess that doesn't apply now because i should be sleeping from about 4am to noon. i guess im just and inert person (objects at rest like to stay at rest!). but i am going to over come my inertia right now! i have 1 hour 15mins before our driver will be here to pick us up to go to work. i am going to get dressed and go for a walk and see what i can find. im going to go in the opposite direction than i went the 1st time. wish me luck in seeing all kinds of totally amazing things!!!

well, i am in heaven here!!!! apparently, in india, i am quite the hottie. i am starting to think that that whole staring thing i experienced on the first day was not due to the whiteness factor; every guy that i pass wants to talk to me and totally looks me up and down.
last night on our dinner break, one of the guys from the office here took us foreignors out to this really great restaurant (the food was absolutely fantastic!!! i am going to be very sad to not have it any more) and i totally scored digits on the way back from the bathroom!!!
bruno, you better watch out, they might just steal me away here!!!

today was my first day at work here, 630pm to 330am. i woke up from my nap at 5pm so disoriented that i didnt even know where i was. i thought for sure that i would never make it through the night at work. but once i got there and started interacting with everyone i woke right up. ive now been off work for 2 hours and am just starting to get sleepy. the uw's that im training are very smart and very concerned about doing their job correctly, but its amazing how many simple things they havent been told. im running thru the kind of ever day stuff that goes into a file and reviewing conditions. everyone is very friendly and it was a great 1st day in a new office. i really enjoy the trainer role, my ability to retain random and/or useless facts is totally coming in handy, and i can share it with people who completely and undividedly give me their attention. im hoping i will get used to the accent soon b/c i am having a very difficult time understanding many of them.
i also went shopping today (before work) and got a really beautiful saree and a set of saphire jewelry (earrings, pendant, ring). everything was so beautiful it was really hard to decide. and i had a super yummy dinner/breakfast of chooza makhni and naan. oh, and we saw and elephant on the way to work tonight!!!!!

it feels a little strange being here. i went on my first mini-excursion by myself yesterday. i walked around the block (left my toothbrush, toothpaste and deodorant in a suitcase i ended up not bringing, brilliant). the thing that feels strange is that everyone stares at me. its a little bit creepy when everyone, whether they are walking or driving by, turns their head to stare at you because you dont belong. i wonder if i will get used to it. its very hard to ignore and not stare back.
today i went shopping with steven (he is from my office, hes a funder there) so we drove through delhi a bit. i had my first experience with beggars then. i knew they would be coming up to the car, but what i didnt know was that they would be pounding on the windows to try and make you look.
i bought some saphire jewelry and a saree for myself. it is really pretty. it was very hard to decide because everything is so beautiful. i had to say no and practically run when he started showing me carpets and furniture (ma'am, we take care of the shipping for you, you do not worry) because i wanted it all!!
i start work tonight. i am excited to see what is going on in the office here.
also, my expense report will be tons of fun to do when i get home as no one uses cash registers so there are no receipts.

copy of blog posted 3:14 am on 1/28: ive already seen two monkeys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so ive been here in new delhi for a few hours now (about 7). i have spent most of them unpacking and trying to shake off the flight (rude arm rest hog who kept elbowing me in the ribs and wouldnt let me look out of the window sat next to me, then, she practically knocked me down once the "fasten seat belt" sign went off to get her bag and then dropped it on my head, welcome to india!). Anyway, I'm not letting the flight lower my level of excitement over being here. most of my time in the room ive had the tv on. its very interesting that there are so many english speaking programs on, and the commercials are sometimes english, sometimes an indian language (i have no idea which one, so i make no assumptions, though its probably punjabi, as that is the most common one, i think), and sometimes in both english and an indian language. it kinda throws you off.
im staying in the radisson here and it is gorgeous! i need to find a store that sells fat girl bathing suits b/c i forgot mine and i HAVE GOT to hit this awesome pool!
and as for the title of this blog, i have seen 2 monkeys already. they were huge!! they were on the rooftop of a building behind the hotel. i was looking out, surveying what i could and i saw an animal walking on the roof. at first i thought it was a dog b/c of the size, but it was walking weird, then i thought,(here is the conversation i had w/ myself) "is it a cat?" "that would be one huge cat" "maybe its a leopard or something" "thats stupid, like there would be a leopard- OMG ITS STANDING UP!!!" "ITS A MONKEY!!!!!!!! wheres my camera?"
i have some very fuzzy pix of them, i couldnt get the window open, hopefully i will get some better ones before i leave.
its almost 5pm here and i am off to explore (and replace everything i left in the original carry-on bag that i was going to bring).
Please do the Needful!!!
